Gov’t Mule Kicks Off 2019 Fall Tour With Explosive Performance At Portland’s State Theatre

On Thursday night, Gov’t Mule opened up their 2019 Bring On The Music Fall Tour with a performance at Portland, ME’s State Theatre. The name of the tour is a play on the band’s new concert film and live album, Bring On The Music – Live From The Capitol Theatre, which arrived in late June on CD, vinyl, DVD, and BluRay.

Gov’t Mule—comprised of guitarist Warren Haynes, drummer Matt Abts, multi-instrumentalist Danny Louis, and bassist Jorgen Carlsson—opened up their first set with “Bad Little Doggie” before moving forward with “Brand New Angel”, “Broke Down On The Brazos”, and a “Tributary Jam”. The band then offered up “Pressure Under Fire”, the first cut of the evening off of 2017’s Revolution Come…Revolution Go, which was followed by Mule classics “Fool’s Moon”, “Sco-Mule”, “Million Miles From Yesterday”, and “Which Way Do We Run?”. The quartet brought the first set to a close with a monstrous sandwich of Al Green‘s “I’m A Ram”, highlighted by Buddy Holly‘s “Not Fade Away” and “Reblow Your Horn” tossed in the middle. “Reblow Your Horn” was played for just the fifth time since 2007.
Following a brief setbreak, Gov’t Mule returned to open up their second set with “Thorns Of Life”, which was followed by covers of Steppenwolf’s “Don’t Step On The Grass, Sam”, the Allman Brothers Band’s “Come & Go Blues”, and Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam.” The band continued on with originals “Larger Than Life” and “Time To Confess” before closing out the set with “Mule”. “Bring On The Music” served as the evening’s lone encore.
