via Jambase

The Mountain Jam music festival moved locations to Bethel Woods in Bethel, New York this year just in time for the 50th anniversasry of the original Woodstock, which took place August 15 – 18, 1969 on the same grounds that hosts Bethel Woods. Gov’t Mule presented a tribute to the 50th anniversary of Woodstock on Saturday night at Mountain Jam.

Mule drummer Matt Abts fell ill, so John Molo played drums during the band’s Woodstock 50 set. Molo was on hand for a performance with Phil Lesh & Friends that featured Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams in addition to members of The Terrapin Family Band. Gov’t Mule frontman Warren Haynes kicked off the tribute with just percussionist Tato Melgar of Lukas Nelson & Promise of The Real for Richie Havens’ “Freedom.” Melgar stuck around as the rest of Mule emerged for Santana’s “Jingo.”

Next was a tribute to The Who in the form of Tommy tracks “Eyesight To The Blind (The Hawker)” and “Listening To You.” Then, Mule honored Ten Years After with “I Can’t Keep From Crying, Sometimes.” Lukas Nelson came out to assist the quartet on covers of The Band’s “This Wheel’s On Fire,” the Grateful Dead’s “Dark Star,” CSNY’s “Find The Cost Of Freedom” and Stills & Young’s “Mr. Soul.” Haynes went on to lead his band through Creedence Clearwater Revival via Screamin’ Jay Hawkins’ “I Put On Spell On You.”

The set continued with Sister Sparrow, Arleigh Kincheloe channeling Janis Joplin on “Piece Of My Heart.” Mule then brought out Arleigh’s brother Jackson and a quartet of backing vocalists for Sly & The Family Stone’s “I Want To Take You Higher.” The Kincheloes vacated the stage for the finale of Joe Cocker via The Beatles’ “With A Little Help From My Friends.” Gov’t Mule encored with a tribute to Jimi Hendrix in the form of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return).”
